Apedale Community Country Park

The old colliery at Apedale has been transformed into something altogether different from what it once was. Walking in, you're greeted by open grassland, woodland trails, and the genuine sense that someone's actually bothered to restore this place properly rather than just slap a few benches down and call it a park.

It's run by the local community, which means it has that slightly rough-around-the-edges charm you won't find in corporate leisure centres. You can walk for a good couple of hours if you fancy it, exploring the varied terrain without ever feeling you're going in circles. The paths wind through different habitats - woodland, grassland, wetland areas - each one with its own character. Birdwatchers tend to do well here; the habitat diversity attracts far more species than you'd expect this close to Crewe.

Families with younger children will find enough to keep them occupied for an afternoon, though it's not a splash-around destination. Teenagers might find it a bit tame unless they're into nature or cycling. Dog walkers absolutely love it - proper off-lead space and the ground's rarely so churned up that you're wrestling with mud.

Free to enter, which is always welcome. You could easily combine this with Tipsy Tree Glamping nearby if you're making a weekend of it in the area. Spring's the best time to visit when the woodland really comes alive and the wetland areas are at their most interesting. Allow two to three hours if you're doing the main circuit.
