Antrim Round Tower

Standing in the churchyard near Antrim town, this round tower rises with the kind of quiet authority that makes you stop and stare. It's one of only two complete round towers in Ireland - medieval structures built by monks between the 10th and 12th centuries, originally used as bell towers and refuges during Viking raids. What you're looking at is roughly 93 feet of pale stone, tapering slightly as it climbs, with a Romanesque doorway positioned well above ground level. This wasn't accident - the height kept raiders out.

History buffs will find themselves genuinely moved. There's something about standing beside something so old and intact that does something to you. Walk around it, look up, try to imagine monks ringing that bell across the valley. The setting is lovely too, tucked among older gravestones in a working churchyard, which keeps it feeling less like a tourist attraction and more like what it actually is - a real piece of the landscape.

It's free to visit and takes about 20 minutes unless you're the type who lingers with a camera. There's no visitor centre or interpretation boards, so bring your own knowledge or research beforehand. The nearby holiday parks - Blair's Castlewood and Six Mile Water, both less than a mile away - make it an easy add-on to a caravan break in the area. Pair it with a walk around Antrim town itself and you've got a proper half-day sorted. Best in dry weather when the stone shows its true colour.
