Annesley Castle

Annesley Castle is essentially a collection of earthworks and ruins scattered across Derbyshire countryside, a few miles north of Nottingham. What you're looking at are the remains of a medieval fortification - banks, ditches, and crumbling stonework that speak to centuries of decay rather than dramatic ruins. It's not Instagram-friendly, but that's rather the point.

The site works best for people who actually enjoy reading the landscape, who can look at a grassy mound and see the castle it once was. Archaeology enthusiasts will find it worthwhile; families with young children might struggle unless they're the type who enjoy muddy walks and a bit of imagination. You're not getting a guided tour or visitor facilities here - this is raw history, undressed and unpolished.

Allow an hour or so, depending on how thoroughly you want to explore the earthworks. There's no charge to visit, and no set opening hours that we're aware of, which means you can show up when it suits you. Check locally before heading out though, as access conditions can change.

If you're staying at one of the nearby holiday parks - Bleinheim Farm Campsite or Riddings Wood are both within a short drive - Annesley makes a decent afternoon detour en route to somewhere else. It's not a destination in itself, but it slots well into a broader Derbyshire walking itinerary. Proper stuff for enthusiasts rather than casual tourists.
