Anagach Woods

The woods near Grantown-on-Spey aren't trying to be anything they're not. Anagach is a straightforward nature reserve - mature Scots pines, a decent network of paths, and the sort of quiet you actually get in the Highlands rather than the Instagram version. The walking here is gentle. You're moving through proper woodland, spotting roe deer if you're lucky, and occasionally breaking out to wider views across the Spey valley.

It works best for people who like their nature unvarnished. Families with younger kids will manage fine - the paths don't demand much and there's enough going on to keep them interested. Serious walkers might find it a touch tame compared to the bigger Highland routes nearby, but it's excellent for a morning outing when you're based in Grantown and the weather's iffy. The trees provide shelter.

Budget ninety minutes to two hours depending on which trails you take. Spring brings migrating birds; autumn's golden with the changing larches. Summer gets busy with caravan park visitors - and yes, Grantown on Spey Caravan Park is practically on the doorstep at less than a mile away, which makes this very convenient for a gentle day out without straying far.

Free to access, no facilities that I could find. Bring proper boots if it's been wet - the paths hold water. It's the sort of place that rewards you simply for being there rather than ticking a box, which is precisely why it deserves your time.
