An Coire

An Coire sits above Tarbert in Argyll, a straightforward hill walk that rewards you with proper views across the Kintyre Peninsula and over to the islands. It's not a monster - you're looking at something just under 900 metres - but the path can be boggy and the scrambling at the top calls for decent boots and a bit of care.

The walk itself takes a couple of hours up, bit less coming down if your knees cooperate. You'll pass through rough moorland and scattered trees before breaking out onto the summit, where the landscape opens up. On a clear day it's genuinely worth the effort. Midges can be grim in July and August, so plan accordingly.

This is one for hillwalkers rather than casual strollers. Kids who are used to walking will manage fine, but it's not a family amble in the park. The boggy bits and exposed sections mean you need proper footwear and navigation skills - it's worth checking the weather before heading out.

If you're basing yourself at Tarbert Holiday Park or The Gather, An Coire makes a solid half-day outing that doesn't require driving far. You can be parked and setting off within minutes. It fits well into a broader loop of Argyll walks - pair it with other local routes if you've got several days to spend in the area. The nearby town gives you supplies and a decent pub once you've finished.
