Amesbury History Centre

The town of Amesbury sits just a few miles north of Salisbury, and its history centre does a proper job of explaining why this corner of Wiltshire matters. You're basically standing in one of England's oldest inhabited landscapes - Bronze Age stuff, Roman roads, the lot - and the centre lays it all out without getting too academic about it.

Inside you'll find artefacts from different periods, displays about the Stonehenge landscape (which dominates the area), and enough local detail to make sense of the walks you might do around here. It's not massive - plan on ninety minutes maximum, even if you read everything - but it's the kind of place that genuinely improves a day out. History buffs and archaeology types will find it worthwhile; younger kids might drift after half an hour unless stones and ancient settlements genuinely grab them.

If you're camping at either Stonehenge Campsite or Salisbury Camping and Caravanning Club Site, this slots in nicely as a rainy-day option or a supplement to walking Stonehenge itself. The centre gives you context for what you're actually looking at out there on the plain, which makes the whole trip make more sense.
