America Wood

You'll find yourself walking through proper woodland just outside Horsham, Sussex - America Wood is one of those places locals know but visitors often miss. It's a working forest, so don't expect manicured paths or visitor centres. What you get instead are shaded trails through mixed trees, the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think.

The woodland itself covers a decent patch, and it's ideal if you're after a straightforward walk without crowds. The paths are manageable for families with older kids, though younger ones might find it a bit samey after half an hour or so. Walkers and anyone who fancies a bit of peace will get more out of it than thrill-seekers. Allow an hour for a decent wander through the main trails, longer if you're the dawdling type.

It's free to access, which is always a bonus. No facilities to speak of though, so bring what you need. The best time is autumn when the light filters through the trees properly, or spring when things are coming back to life.

If you're camping at one of the nearby parks - Honeybridge Park is barely a mile away, Washington Caravan & Camping just over two miles - America Wood makes a solid morning outing before heading to bigger attractions. It's not a destination in itself, but it's well worth the walk if you're already in the area around Horsham. Pair it with a visit to Knepp Wildland Safaris down the road if you want something with more to it.
