Amberdale Spinney

The woodland path into Amberdale Spinney is properly rewarding if you're after a decent walk without the crowds that plague the big country estates. It's a genuine forest rather than a manicured park - the kind of place where you'll actually see birds and the occasional deer if you're lucky enough, not just feed pigeons on a lawn.

The spinney works best for walkers and families with older kids who won't get bored after twenty minutes. Bring proper footwear; the paths get muddy after rain and tree roots are everywhere. You're looking at a solid hour or two depending on how much you dawdle and whether you take every fork in the path. Free access, which is always a bonus, and there's genuine peace here - just the sound of leaves and whatever's rustling in the undergrowth.

Locationwise, it's about a fifteen-minute drive south of Leicester, which makes it a solid half-day add-on to a longer holiday. If you're based at one of the nearby parks like Valley View Escapes or Fox's Furrow, this is the sort of place you pop to on a morning before heading to a proper attraction in the afternoon. Holly Farm Fishery is also within striking distance if you fancy mixing woodland walks with somewhere the kids can burn off energy elsewhere.

It's not Instagram-famous and it won't blow your mind, but that's rather the point. This is proper Midlands woodland - honest, accessible, and free.
