Alverdiscott Roman Temporary Camp

The Romans left their fingerprints all over Devon, and Alverdiscott is where you can actually see the outline they traced. It's a temporary camp - the kind legionaries threw together during a campaign, not a permanent fort - and what makes it properly interesting is that you can still make out the defensive ditches and ramparts from the air and on the ground. The site sits near Bideford, inland enough to feel removed from the usual coastal tourist circuit.

You won't find visitor facilities or interpretation boards here. It's archaeology as it should be sometimes - just the landscape doing the talking. Walkers and history enthusiasts will find it rewarding; families with small kids might struggle unless they're genuinely into Roman stuff, as there's nothing to physically climb or explore in the traditional sense.
