About Alva Glen
What makes it work is the combination of things. The woodland is lovely, the burn is always there to listen to, and there are old stone bridges and ruins scattered through if you look properly. It's not a strenuous walk - maybe forty minutes to the top - but it feels more substantial than the time suggests. The views back over Clackmannanshire appear suddenly at the top, which is always satisfying.
Families with kids aged eight and up will find it engaging. Younger ones might struggle with the uneven ground and steepness in places. Walkers and history types will appreciate the industrial heritage dotted about - the glen was once a working area, and you can still spot evidence of that. It's free, which is excellent, and there's a small car park at the village end.
Stay at either Witches Craig or Highland Gateway nearby, both solid bases for exploring the area around Stirling. Alva Glen fills a morning or early afternoon nicely without dominating your day. Not Instagram-famous, which means you'll likely have it mostly to yourself.
