Alton Public Gardens

The Public Gardens in Alton are a proper slice of Victorian horticulture that locals have kept quietly to themselves. You're looking at roughly six acres of formal beds, shaded walks, and the sort of rose garden that makes you understand why people got obsessed with them in the 1800s. It's the kind of place where an hour disappears without you noticing - especially if you've got decent weather.

This works best for a slow amble rather than a destination day trip. Families with young kids might find it a bit sedate unless there's a playground tucked away, but walkers passing through Alton town centre will absolutely appreciate the respite. The beds are well-maintained, which matters. Nothing worse than paying to see a garden that's let itself go.

Worth knowing: admission appears to be free, though I'd check locally as these things change. Spring through to early autumn is the obvious window - you'll catch the roses and herbaceous borders at their best. Winter's bleaker but quieter if solitude's your thing.

If you're staying at Wigwam Holidays just up the road (1.4 miles), this makes an easy morning before heading out to longer walks in the South Downs. Feather Down Manor Farm's closer at 2.1 miles, and the gardens sit nicely alongside a gentle poke around Alton's town centre. Don't expect Kew. Expect something honest and well-kept that takes the rush out of your day.
