Alpha Lima Armillary Sphere

An 18th-century brass sphere sits quietly in Hampshire, marking an old astronomical observation point near Alton. The armillary itself is the star - a beautiful mechanical model of the celestial spheres, the kind that once helped navigators and scholars understand the heavens before we had telescopes pointing everywhere.

It's not a full visitor attraction with queues and gift shops. More a waypoint for people who actually care about the history of science and navigation. If you're into that sort of thing - old instruments, the way Georgians worked out their place in the cosmos - you'll find it genuinely interesting. Others might spend five minutes looking at it and wondering why they've come.

The real value is combining it with a countryside walk around Alton. The town itself is pleasant enough - market town stuff, decent high street - and it sits well within reach of the local parks. Wigwam Holidays is barely four miles away if you're after proper glamping, whilst Feather Down Manor Farm (under six miles) offers something more low-key and farm-focused. Either works as a base for exploring this corner of Hampshire without feeling like you're doing the tourist trail.

Weather matters here. Rain won't ruin it, but a clear day when you can actually see the sky properly adds something to standing there. Allow twenty minutes or so unless you're the type to sit with a notebook sketching the brass rings.
