The East Entrance at Almondell pulls you straight into woodland where the Almond Water runs crystal-clear over stones. It's a proper working country park - not some manicured tourist trap - with genuine nature reserves where you might actually spot something interesting rather than just tick a box on an Instagram list.

Once through the gates near Broxburn, you're into a network of trails that range from gentle riverside walks to proper woodland hikes. The water features heavily - there are spots where you can stand on the bank and watch for kingfishers, and the paths snake alongside the burn in ways that feel genuinely wild for somewhere this close to Edinburgh. Allow a couple of hours minimum if you want to do the trails justice, though you could stretch it to half a day without effort.

Families will find it manageable enough - the riverside paths are relatively level and kids won't get bored spotting wildlife and splashing about near the water. If you're into birdwatching or photography, this place delivers. Serious walkers might find the scale a bit modest compared to what's further into the Lowlands, but it's excellent for a morning excursion.

It's a free-entry situation and genuinely worth the short drive from Newbridge. Stay nearby at Linwater Caravan Park - only eight tenths of a mile away - and you've got yourself a cracking base for exploring this corner of Edinburgh's green edge without fighting city traffic.
