All Saints Church Datchworth

The church sits tucked away in Datchworth village, a few miles east of Welwyn Garden City, and it's the sort of place you'd miss entirely if you weren't looking for it. All Saints is properly medieval - 14th century mostly, though bits are older - with a tower that catches your eye from the churchyard.

Inside, there's genuine character. The nave's got decent proportions for a village church, and if you're into old woodwork and brass memorials, you'll spend a good half hour reading the walls. It's the kind of place history types genuinely enjoy, not just another tourist tick-box. The churchyard itself is peaceful, with old yews and proper gravestones that tell stories if you bother to look.

Not a destination you'll spend hours at, but it works well as part of a wider wander around north Hertfordshire. If you're staying at Almshoe Glamping or Church Farm Ardeley - both nearby - it's absolutely worth a morning visit before heading elsewhere. The village is quiet, almost sleepy, which is exactly the appeal. You could easily walk the churchyard and interior in forty minutes, then grab lunch back in Welwyn Garden City.

Admission appears to be free, though do check locally as opening times aren't well published. Go on a clear day - the light through the windows transforms the place entirely.
