Alford Valley Railway

Steam trains still run along a genuine stretch of the old Great North of Scotland Railway line near Alford, and it's a proper treat if you've got even a passing interest in railways. The museum preserves this little corner of transport history with lovingly restored locomotives and carriages you can actually climb aboard - not just gawp at through glass. You'll spend a good two to three hours poking around the vintage stock, wandering the platforms, and if you time it right, watching a steam engine actually do its thing along the tracks. The whole operation feels genuinely run by enthusiasts rather than corporate types, which means it has real character.

Walking enthusiasts and families with kids aged six upwards will get the most from this. Younger children might find it a bit dull once they've peered inside two carriages, but anyone old enough to appreciate how the mechanisms work will find it absorbing. The setting is rural Aberdeenshire, so there's nothing flashy about it - just good honest nostalgia in what was once a working railway.
