Alder Copse

Walking into Alder Copse feels like stepping into someone's private woodland - dense, quiet, properly atmospheric. It's a small forest near Holford in Somerset, the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think, which is rarer than it should be. The alder trees give the woods their character, creating a damp, shadowy canopy that stays cool even on warm days. There are paths threading through, though nothing formally maintained - it's more a case of following where others have walked before you.

For families with restless kids, it's honest work. Under-tens might find an hour enough before they start asking how much longer. But if you've got teenagers or proper walkers in tow, there's something genuinely restorative about the place. It doesn't require an entrance fee or special permission that I'm aware of, and you can turn up more or less anytime. There's no visitor centre, no facilities - which is either brilliant or annoying depending on your mood.

It sits well within a broader Somerset holiday, particularly if you're based at one of the nearby parks like Moorhouse Campsite or Mill Farm. The Quantock Hills aren't far away if you want something more dramatic, but Alder Copse works as a gentler morning wander before heading somewhere else. Holford itself is the jumping-off point, a small village without much retail, so come prepared. Worth a detour if you're passing through the area and fancy some quiet woodland time.
