Alconbury (Independent) Baptist Church

A solid red-brick chapel that's been serving the Alconbury community since the Independent Baptist movement took hold in these parts. It's the sort of building you'd walk past on the Huntingdon road without a second glance - nothing fancy, no spire, just honest Victorian-era stonework doing what it was built to do.

The appeal here is architectural and historical rather than, say, breathtaking. The interior is functional: wooden pews, gallery seating upstairs, a proper sense of what worship looked like for ordinary people in the 1800s. If you're into nonconformist church history or the social fabric of rural Cambridgeshire, it rewards a proper look. Casual visitors might find it a bit sparse, though.

Access depends on whether there's a service on - best bet is contacting someone locally before you make the trip east from Huntingdon. Opening hours aren't widely publicised, so you'll need to be flexible. Free admission when it is open.

This works well as a stop if you're basing yourself at one of the nearby caravan parks - Huntingdon Boathaven is closest at just over three miles, or Grafham Water if you're after something a bit more rural. It's not a destination in itself, but if you're exploring the architectural heritage of the area or interested in the broader story of religious nonconformity in England, it's worth the short detour.
