Alan's Bridge

The River Blackwater cuts through countryside south of Braintree, and Alan's Bridge is where you actually want to stop and look about. It's a proper nature reserve - nothing fancy, just wetland habitat that does proper things for birds and plants without needing an admission desk or a visitor centre.

The walking's straightforward here. You're moving through reed beds and grassland where you'll spot warblers, reed buntings, and if you're lucky, water voles doing their thing in the channels. It's the sort of place where you notice things - dragonflies in summer, frost patterns on the water in winter. Bring binoculars if you know how to use them; you won't feel out of place but you don't need them either.

Walkers and birders get the most from it. Families with kids will manage an hour, maybe ninety minutes if the children are into spotting things, but it's not set up as a playground. The paths are decent enough but not heroically maintained - wear appropriate boots if there's been rain.

It slots nicely into a wider Essex exploration. Readers Field Glamping sits just 3.7 miles north, so you could base yourself there and take morning walks along the water before heading elsewhere. Spring and early autumn are best - the birds are active and the midges haven't turned absolute. Go early in the day if you want solitude and actual wildlife watching rather than a stroll.
