Airthrey Loch

The loch sits in a proper valley just outside Stirling, ringed by trees and backed by the Ochil Hills. It's a freshwater lake rather than some dramatic Highland drama - but that's exactly what makes it work for a day out without the crowds.

You can walk the perimeter path, which takes about an hour at a steady pace. The water's dark and still most days, reflecting the surrounding woodland. There's nothing fancy here - no visitor centre, no cafe, just the walk itself. Families with younger kids might get restless after thirty minutes or so, but anyone who enjoys a gentle circuit with decent views will find it worth the trip. The path is well-maintained and straightforward.

It's free to visit and open whenever you fancy. The nearby Witches Craig Caravan & Camping Park sits less than a mile away, making it an obvious pairing if you're based in the area. The walk's particularly good in autumn when the trees turn, though spring brings the bird activity if you're into that sort of thing.

Stirling's just down the road, so you could easily combine this with the castle or a walk around the town itself. On its own, Airthrey Loch is a solid hour's outing rather than a full day's entertainment, but it beats another lap of the caravan park.
