Afon Tanat

The Afon Tanat is a proper little river valley gem in Powys, running through some genuinely lovely countryside near Llanymynech. It's not a dramatic waterfall or a vast reservoir - it's a quietly beautiful stretch of water where the river pools up nicely, surrounded by woodland and grazing land that feels properly rural. You'll find decent walking along the banks, and the water itself is clear enough to spot fish if you're patient. The whole area has that unhurried Mid Wales feel, the kind of place where you can hear yourself think.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's a solid half-day excursion rather than a full-day outing - allow a couple of hours to properly explore the banks and maybe grab a spot to sit and watch the water. The walking is gentle, nothing technical, so it suits families with younger kids and anyone after a peaceful riverside ramble. Given how quiet it is, spring and autumn are probably your best bets, when the light's better and the summer crowds have vanished.

If you're staying at Grantley Court, Big Bear Lodge, or Valley View - all within six miles - you're well-positioned to factor this in as a morning walk before lunch. It works nicely as part of a broader exploration of the Tanat Valley rather than as a standalone destination. Llanymynech itself has a few amenities, so you can grab a coffee before heading out. The river's there year-round, but winter rain swells it considerably - more dramatic, but less inviting if you fancy lingering.
