Afan Forest Park High Bridge

The High Bridge at Afan Forest Park is a proper engineering statement - a Victorian iron footbridge that carries you 80 metres above a wooded valley floor. It's not the longest or highest bridge you'll ever cross, but there's something about stepping onto those grated metal walkways with nothing but forest and air below that makes your stomach do a little flip.

You'll find it deep in the park's network of trails near Port Talbot, and it's best tackled as part of a longer woodland walk rather than a quick snap-and-go. The bridge itself takes maybe five minutes to cross, but the approach through the forest is where the real value lies - proper atmospheric stuff, especially on damp Welsh days when the mist clings to the trees. The valley view from the middle is the payoff, though I'll be honest, it's not going to change your life.

This works best for walkers and families with kids old enough not to get scared of heights. Young children might find the grated floor unsettling, and it's genuinely not worth dragging a toddler all the way through the forest just for a thirty-second bridge crossing. Allow a couple of hours for the full loop walk if you want to make an afternoon of it.

Combine it with the broader Afan Forest trails and you've got a solid day out. If you're camping at nearby Willow Springs, this is an easy escape into something genuinely worth exploring. The forest around it does the heavy lifting - the bridge is just the highlight.
