Addington Hills

The views from Addington Hills stretch across the North Downs and beyond - on a clear day you'll see right across to London. It's a proper local favourite, this one, with good reason. The reserve itself covers 127 acres of chalk grassland and woodland just outside Warlingham, making it an easy reach from the village if you're staying nearby.

Walking trails crisscross the site, ranging from gentle strolls to more ambitious loops that take in the high points. The grass slopes are steep in places, which means proper views but also means you'll feel it in your legs. Spring brings orchids and cowslips if you're into wildflowers; summer's hot and exposed up top, so bring water. Most people allow two to three hours for a decent wander, though you could knock it out in an hour if you're just after the vista.

Historically minded visitors will appreciate that this sits on chalk downland that's been grazed for centuries - there's real ecological value here rather than just pretty scenery. Families with younger kids should know the paths can be muddy after rain and there's little in the way of facilities, so come prepared.

If you're based at Milberry Green Meadows - the holiday park just a few miles away - this makes for an excellent morning or afternoon break from the caravan. It's the sort of place that works better in quieter months; weekends can get crowded with local groups. Free to access, naturally, and no need to book.
