Aberystwyth Castle

The ruins sit on a headland jutting into Cardigan Bay, commanding views that stretch for miles across the water. Aberystwyth Castle is what remains of a 13th-century fortress built by the English to control this stretch of the Welsh coast - two concentric sets of walls, towers, and earthworks that tell you immediately this place mattered. You can walk the perimeter, clamber up to the higher ground, and actually get a sense of how defendable the position was. The sea wind up there is proper fierce.

It's free to wander around, which is rare enough these days. Allow an hour if you're taking photos and reading the information boards, less if you're just passing through. Kids won't be bored for long unless they're into castles specifically - there's climbing and exploring, but not a huge amount to do once you've circled the walls. History types will appreciate the Norman origins and the later Welsh rebuilding under Llywelyn ap Gruffydd before the English took it back.

Best visited on a clear day when the views actually reward the walk up from Aberystwyth town centre - about fifteen minutes on foot, or there's parking nearby if your legs aren't keen. Spring and autumn work well, fewer tourists and the light's better for photography. If you're staying at one of the nearby parks like Aberystwyth Holiday Village or Clarach Bay, this makes an easy morning or late-afternoon outing before heading to the seafront proper. Worth thirty minutes of your time at minimum.
