The Roman fort here isn't exactly a show-stopper to look at - you're essentially standing on lumpy ground where the Romans once kept watch over northern Britain. But that's rather the point. This is proper archaeology: no reconstructions, no gift shop, just the actual street layout of a fort that mattered enough to defend this edge of the empire for decades.

Walking the footprint, you can trace where buildings stood, where soldiers drilled, where supplies were stockpiled. It's the kind of place that sparks the imagination far more than a visitor centre would. The nearest substantial remains are over in Old Aberdeen, but knowing this site existed - that legionaries were stationed here around 80 AD - changes how you see the whole landscape.

Historically minded walkers will get something out of it, though you'll want to pair it with other Roman sites in the area to make a proper afternoon of it. Half an hour here, longer if you're the type to sit and think about what occupation and frontier life actually meant. It's free and accessible, which is refreshing.

If you're staying at Seaview Caravan Park just up the coast, this fits as an easy side trip before or after beach time. Don't expect manicured paths or explanatory boards - come for the substance, not the packaging.
