4 The Green Man

The Green Man sits on Witney's high street as a proper independent gallery space - the kind of place that actually feels like someone's cared about what's on the walls. We wandered in on a grey Thursday afternoon and found ourselves looking at contemporary work from regional artists, everything from paintings to sculpture to the odd installation that makes you tilt your head and wonder what you're looking at. That's the charm of it, really.

It's not a massive space, so you're not going to spend three hours here. Thirty minutes to an hour is realistic, longer if the current exhibition grabs you. The gallery doesn't have the polished, slightly intimidating feel of bigger regional institutions - it's approachable, which matters. Families with older kids would be fine; younger ones might get restless quickly.

Free entry, which is always a bonus. Worth a quick visit if you're in Witney town centre anyway, particularly if you're based at one of the nearby parks like Bablock Hythe or Lincoln Farm - both within easy reach for a morning browse before heading out to the Cotswolds. Not a reason to plan your entire holiday around, but a solid option for a rainy afternoon or when you're taking a break from walking.
